DDO Photometry of M71: Carbon and Nitrogen Patterns Among Evolving Giants
نویسنده
چکیده
We present V , B − V, and DDO C(41 − 42) and C(42 − 45) photometry for a sample of 75 red giants down to MV = +2 in the relatively metal-rich Galactic globular cluster M71. The C(41− 42) colors reveal a bimodal distribution of CN band strengths generally anticorrelated with CH band strength as measured by the C(42 − 45) color. Both DDO colors agree well with those found in 47 Tucanae – a nearby globular cluster of similar metallicity – and suggest nearly identical C and N abundance patterns among the giants of both clusters. A comparison with synthetic DDO colors demonstrates that little change in surface C or N abundance is required to match the colors of the M71 giants over the entire luminosity range observed. Apparently like 47 Tuc (a cluster of much greater mass and central concentration), M71 exhibits an abundance pattern which cannot be solely the result of internal mixing. Near-infrared photometry of carbon stars in the Sagittarius dwarf irregular galaxy and DDO
Aims. We investigate the intermediate-age asymptotic giant branch stellar population of two Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies to characterize their carbon star population in near-infrared (IR). Methods. Our work is based on near-IR photometry complemented with optical ground based and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry. Near-IR photometry is based on our and archival J and Ks-band image...
متن کاملHipparcos absolute magnitudes for metal rich K giants and the calibration of DDO photometry
Parallaxes for 581 bright K giants have been determined using the Hipparcos satellite. We combine the trigonometric parallaxes with ground based photometric data to determine the K giant absolute magnitudes. For all these giants, absolute magnitude estimates can also be made using the intermediate band photometric DDO system (Janes 1975, 1979). We compare the DDO absolute magnitudes with the ve...
متن کاملCarbon abundances and 12 C / 13 C from globular cluster giants
The behaviour of the ∆ν=2 CO bands around 2.3 μm was examined by comparing observed and synthetic spectra in stars in globular clusters of different metallicity. Changes in the C/C isotopic ratio and the carbon abundances were investigated in stars from 3500–4900 K in the galactic globular clusters M71, M5, M3 and M13, covering the metallicity range from –0.7 to –1.6. We found relatively low ca...

An analysis of the CN and CH band strengths measured in a large sample of M71 and M13 main sequence stars by Cohen (1999a,b) is undertaken using synthetic spectra to quantify the underlying C and N abundances. In the case of M71 it is found that the observed CN and CH band strengths are best matched by the identical C/N/O abundances which fit the bright giants, implying: 1) little if any mixing...
